SEOUL, Jan. 19 (Yonhap) – “Most trees in the photo have scars. I think it represents our hearts because I believe many people have pain in themselves. That is why I keep watching it and taking photos.”

The photographer Kim Jung-man(68), who will participate in Photo Brussels Festival 06, held in Brussels, Belgium, on Jan. 21, explained about his exhibition “Street of Broken Hearts” during the interview in his own studio in Seoul on Jan. 19.

Photographer Kim devoted his 9 years on capturing the tree on the causeway from home to his studio and the surrounding scenery since 2008.

Kim said that his gaze to take a picture of only one tree shifted to the trees next to it, and he also happened to take pictures of all 4 seasons rather than just summer, captured the wind passing by the tree, and took photos of birds sitting on the tree in the end.

The photos were all printed in black on Korean traditional paper, or “hanji.”

The photographer chose hanji as he thought it was the best match for Ink wash painting, “I didn’t mean to print it on hanji from the beginning, but as I continued taking photos, the word ‘Ink wash painting’ came up to my mind, which I’d never thought of.”

Kim Jung-man showed great expectations for displaying the tree photos, to which he poured a lot of affection for 9 years, to the foreign audience, whom he could not meet well, through this Brussels Festival.

Especially, his photo was reported to have been used in the poster, which introduces the Photo Brussels festival 06, where about 20 famous artists participate from all around the world.

Kim expressed regrets as he gave up the plan of leaving for Brussels for the opening when he was hospitalized for a while due to pneumonia at the end of last year.

Although Kim Jung-man showed a cosmopolitan lifestyle as he followed his father, a doctor, to Africa, attended university in France, and lived in Japan and the United States after that, Kim said what he find most interesting recently is to express Korean beauty.

In particular, Kim announced that he would like to have figures in Inwang jesaekdo of Jeong Seon and genre painting of Shin Yun-bok into pictures this year.
